Panic Disorder Treatment
Panic Disorder is a mental health condition that is characterized by sudden and repeated attacks of fear or feelings of losing control even when there is no real danger. These attacks are also known as panic attacks, and they can occur at any time and without warning. Because of their unpredictability, people who experience panic attacks may not be able to carry out normal daily routines because they are worried about having another one.
If you suspect that you may have Panic Disorder and have suffered from one or more panic attacks, you may feel frightened and worried about when the next attack may come. Fortunately, you can get relief from this disorder through a better understanding of the risk factors and potential psychotherapy treatment options.
Symptoms of Panic Disorder
People who are diagnosed with Panic Disorder have experienced one or more panic attacks. Panic attacks may include some or all of the following symptoms:
- Feelings of impending doom
- Heart palpitations
- Shortness of breath
- Trembling
- Excessive sweating or chills
- Dizziness
- Chest pain
- Nausea
Risk Factors
Panic Disorder can occur in men, women, and children, but there is a higher proportion of occurrence in adult females. Some of the proposed causes include having a family history of panic attacks, being under extreme stress, experiencing a traumatic event, and certain changes in brain functionality. Some people may also be more prone to Panic Disorder simply because of their temperament. Those who are naturally more sensitive to stress may have a higher risk of having a panic attack.
Complications of Panic Disorder
Panic Disorder can be debilitating and cause you to live in a constant state of fear of having another panic attack. Because of this, many people develop agoraphobia — fear and avoidance of places or situations that might cause you to panic and offer no easy way to escape. In addition to agoraphobia, some people may also develop complications such as depression or other mental health disorders; maladaptive behaviors such as increased reliance on alcohol or drugs; and problems at work, school, or home.
Prevention
There are several things you can do to reduce your symptoms. They include avoiding the use of stimulants such as caffeine, exercising regularly, and getting enough sleep. Keep in mind that these self-treatment methods will likely not prevent panic attacks from happening completely, but they should help to reduce your symptoms. You should also consider getting help from a licensed psychotherapist as soon as possible to prevent panic attacks from becoming more severe or more frequent.
